Wampanoag men and women would often paint their bodies. Several of the most common colors were: rusty red (red ochre), yellow (yellow ochre), or black lead (graphite). Such painting was intended as a mark of beauty, in war, or during particular games. Jewelry, intricate clothing designs, and tattoos were also common adornments in the 17th century as well as today among the Wampanoag people.
