The History Place - World War I

Sergeants Sedwick and Hurcomb of the London Regiment, the first British soldiers to arrive at Jerusalem, are greeted by the Turkish mayor and others with the white flag of surrender. Below: General Edmund Allenby enters through the Jaffe Gate into the ancient city as the British formally take control.

Following the capture of Jerusalem, the northward pursuit of the Turks by British forces continued. Below Left: An Australian cavalry camp, north of Jerusalem, on the Nablus Road. Below Right: Indian Lancers bring in Turkish prisoners.
