ARMOR OF THE OKEGAWADŌ TYPE
Late Momoyama-early Edo periods, late 16th-early 17th century
ARMOR OF THE OKEGAWADŌ TYPE
This spectacular armor features an imposing six-foot-tall gilt ornament (sashimono) representing three feathers, designed to stand out during inter-clan conflicts. Visible from afar but too fragile for combat, it was probably worn by a samurai surveying the battlefield or taking part in a parade or ceremony.
