
Lt. Douglas Campbell of California, age 22, the first member of the American Army Aviation Corps to become an Ace in the war. He shot down his fifth German plane on May 31, 1918. Other American-born Aces had trained with the French and fought alongside them in a special French unit called the Lafayette Escadrille, before America entered the war.
