The History Place - World War I

Troops from India after their arrival in France to join the British in the trenches of the Western Front. Over a million Indian soldiers served with the British during the war in France, Belgium, the Middle East and elsewhere. Below: Troops from the French colony of Senegal, Africa, march through a village in France. The French were able to raise half-a-million colonial troops for the Western Front. While in France, the troops enjoyed many of the privileges of French citizenship--a completely new experience for them.
