John Pory, a 1622/3 visitor to New Plymouth, described "a substantial palisado about their [town] of 2700 foot in compass, stronger than I have seen any in Virginia." The first 20 houses were built on both sides of a broad street that ran down the hill from the fort almost to the bay. There is also a cross street that connects the north and south gates. |
